Iridology – Diagnosing Disease by Looking Into Your Eyeballs
Romantics believe that the entire soul is revealed by gazing into someone’s eyes. Now iridologists have gone one step further. When they look into your eyes, they see your entire health status mapped out before them, and can ascertain whether you are suffering from heart disease, muscular problems or just plain old diarrhea.
Iridology posits that there’s more than meets the eye with regards to one’s health.
Real doctors believe that only a few diseases can be by looking into your eye, including (not surprisingly) certain eye conditions such as a detached retina. But people who practice iridology, or iris diagnosis, believe that the eye reveals much, much more.
In fact, some iridologists believe they are 99 percent accurate in detecting cancer anywhere in the body, and that they can even tell when someone is about to die – all by looking into the eyes. They make such a claim because they believe that each part of the body is represented by an area in the eye, and when that body part gets sick, the corresponding part of the eye is affected as well.
Many also believe that the markings in the eye, specifically around the iris, tell an iridologist not only about current illnesses and disease, but also about past illnesses – and even ones you are likely to get in future. Iridologists believe that changes in the iris can appear before other physical symptoms develop, so iridology is seen not only as a diagnostic tool, but a preventative one as well.
Origin of Iridology
Iridology began, so the story goes, with one Dr Ignatz von Peczely, a Hungarian who had the childhood misfortune of accidentally breaking the leg of an owl in his back garden when he was just 11 years of age ( he was trying to free it from shrubbery, a twisted vine or a tree – the exact place is unclear). Young Ignatz was traumatized by the incident, so much that he looked into the owl’s eyes. It was then he noticed that a dark stripe was developing in the owl’s iris.
Conscientious Ignatz nursed the owl back to health, as one does, and let it fly free. Of course the bird stuck around, and later Iggy noticed that the bird’s iris had changed once it had healed. When he grew up and became a doctor (Ignatz, not the owl), he developed the world’s first iridology chart. This chart, crafted more than 150 years ago, is considered the birth of iridology, as we know it.
What an Iridologist Does
A session with an iridologist usually begins by the brandishing of the instruments of the trade, which can include a magnifying glass, flashlight, cameras, microscopes and eye gouging knives and scalpels (just kidding). Their examination of a patient’s eye involves looking for changes in the eye tissue, as well as looking for irregular coloring and patterns.
These patterns, or markings, correspond to an iridology chart, which maps out the iris into special delineated zones, which correspond to the parts of the body. So if there is a marking in your iris which corresponds to the prostate on the chart, that means you could have – or could develop – a problem with your prostate (assuming you’re male, that is).
While iridologist are quick to point out that they cannot pinpoint a specific diseases – although in truth some say they can – what they do claim is that they can tell you the state of every organ in your body, and which inherited or acquired tendencies you will have toward a specific ailment, condition or disease.
They can also extrapolate – a problem in the iris that corresponds to the pancreas means you might be diabetic – but most iridologists will then suggest you see a medical doctor for a qualified opinion.
Some iridologists also believe that the color of your iris makes you more prone to certain conditions. Women with blue eyes, for example, are more prone to having bouts of unpleasant vaginal discharge than women with brown eyes, while people whose irises are a combination of brown and blue are more prone to flatulence.
Pet Iridology
Iridology for pets is the same as iridology for humans: the eye is used to determine the state of Fido’s, Fluffy’s or Rover’s health. Iridologists claim that by studying the markings of an animal’s eye – whether it be a dog, cat, horse or even rabbit – they can detect health issues future, past and present. Other benefits of seeing an iridologst before you see a vet, according to trained pet iridologists, include:
Pinpointing the actual problem. Often pet owners are worried about a certain animal, but are unable to figure out what exactly is wrong due to their pet’s lack of speech and inability to communicate fully. Iridologists claim they can intervene and spot the health issue for animals who can’t speak up for themselves.
Alerting owners to past problems. Pets who are brought from shelters or pounds often have no accompanying medical history. Pet iridologists claim they can let the owners know about their animal’s past, and therefore manage potential illnesses better.
Getting a better breed. Assessing the iris of an animal’s eye is something a trained pet iridologist claims is beneficial in determining an animal’s weaknesses and strengths, which are vital when deciding whether to breed or not.
Maintaining your animal’s health. Iridology can help both when a problem occurs, they claim, and as a regular preventative check-up to keep your pet healthy and happy.
Keeping behavior in check. Often pet owners are flummoxed when an animal’s behavior changes for seemingly no apparent reason. Iridologists claim they can help to find the root of the problem.
If you feel that you – or your pet – could benefit from iridology, there is no shortage of people out there willing to take your money in exchange for a quick look at your eyeball. But most scientists as well as people in the medical profession classify iridology as a pseudoscience, saying that it has no real basis whatsoever.
In fact, in scientific tests the father of modern-day iridology – Bernard Jensen – failed to pinpoint which patients had kidney impairments, when asked to diagnose the eyeballs of 143 different people. Other iridologists worldwide scored equally poorly when asked to distinguish which patients had health problems such as gallbladder disease, ulcerative colitis and heart disease – by examining their irises.
While iridology can be a bit of fun, the risk is that some people will take it seriously and become unnecessarily frightened by a bogus diagnosis. If you have a problem with a particular part of your body, you’d be better off having that part of your body examined by a medical professional, rather than having an iridologist stare at your eyes. It just doesn’t make sense – scientific or otherwise.
Scientific Current Events – New Discoveries
The life of human beings is being influenced everyday by the fast-paced actions made in science. However, many individuals are “scientifically illiterate” due to a concern of science or a mentality that science is not directly related to their lives or very difficult to understand. Scientific current events are being done all over the world for various reasons. Some may result in good but some may in bad! However, to safeguard the life of human beings and other living beings and to improve our life, these events are inevitable.
The discovery of the missing link for the origin of comets by a team of astronomers is one of the astonishing discoveries. This team includes Brett Gladman, an astronomer from the University of British Columbia, who has discovered an unusual object whose inverse and inclined orbit around the Sun may elucidate the origins of some comets.
Another important scientific event is the discovery of “gene enhancer” by some scientists. This gene enhancer, recognized as HACNS1, may have imparted to the evolution of the unambiguously opposable human thumb, and perhaps modifications in the foot or ankle that facilitate human beings to walk on two legs.
The researchers from TAU create new stem cell screening tool. The researches on stem cell are the next great leap in the field of medicine. In future, new cells and tissues grown in a laboratory could substitute a failing heart, or novel cells take the place of the injured cells in the brain.
The studies by National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) reveals how new helium-ion microscope works. Just as test pilots push planes to inquire into their limits, researchers at NIST are examining the most novel microscope technology further to improve measurement exactness at the nano-scale level.
Fatty acid synthase of mammals is one of the most complicated molecular synthetic machines in the cells of human beings. It is also an assuring target for developing anti-obesity and anti-cancer drugs and for mending metabolic disorders.
The researchers from ISU have mapped the first genome sequence of plant-parasitic nematode. Many plant-parasitic nematodes exist in the world; however, only few are responsible for damaging agricultural crops globally (loss of about $157 billion every year).
The most recent scientific event is the “big bang” test done in Geneva in September 10, 2008. This is the world’s largest particle collider. Many scientists from all over the world have involved in this research. It took almost 20 years to complete and conduct the first test. Almost 3.76 billion euros, that is approximately equal to 5.46 billion US dollars, have been spent for this research. This is one of the most complex and costliest scientific experiments ever attempted. The result of this research about big bag will answer us how Earth and other heavenly bodies were evolved.
Nikon D3100: Easy To Use Camera
Nikon D3100 is the latest offering from Nikon, a well-known company in the field of optics, as well as imaging. It manufactures a wide range of products, such as cameras, measurement instruments, microscopes, binoculars, as well as steppers, which are used in photo-lithography steps in semiconductor fabrication. Although the company is the second largest manufacturer of such steppers, it is known more for the high-quality cameras, which it offers.
The D3100 is its newest entry-level product and its very first DSLR, which can record 1080p HD video clips. Now, a digital single-lens reflex camera or simply DSLR refers to a digital camera, which makes use of a mechanical mirror arrangement as well as penta-prism for directing light from lens to the optical viewfinder located at the backside of the digital camera.
A successor to D3000, Nikon D3100 features, 14.2 CMOS sensor, wider ISO range, 3 inch LCD, Live View shooting, and a variety of revisions. It is designed primarily for newcomers, who are new to DSLR, especially people who are interested in taking amazing pictures, without any complex functionality. A number of automatic setting features ensure that you have to do little in terms of manual function. Most of it gets done automatically. The Scene Auto Selector feature selects the exact mode, which matches the shooting condition, whereas the Scene Recognition features delivers crystal clear images. You also have the Guide Mode feature, which would provide you with step-by-step instructions which would help to take the kind of pictures that you want.
Apart from that, it has an 11-point auto-focus arrangement, which ensures that everything stays in focus, thereby ensuring razor-sharp images, for capturing the most momentary movements or expressions. The 14.2 CMOS sensor gives you amazing color as well as detail in the pictures or movies; so much so that you would like to see the images again and again. High ISO sensitivity feature helps you when you take indoor shots or capture images of restless children who are always on the move. The Picture control setting is another interesting feature. This feature allows you to adjust the mood and look of the images before the shoot. You may select from 6 settings, i.e. Standard, Neutral, Vivid, Monochrome, Landscape and Portrait.
Apart from that, the in-camera imaging and movie editing feature allows you to retouching, red-eye correction and filter effects may be done in the camera itself. You do not need a PC to do so. Another interesting feature is the Dual Integrated Dust Reduction System, which keeps away dust from the image sensor of the camera for crystal clear images.
It is compact, light as well as durable. So, you can easily carry it over your shoulders and take pictures whenever and wherever you want.
Forensic Blood Analysis – How Do CSI’s Know If They Are Dealing With Blood?

Whenever a bloodlike stain is found at the scene of a crime, the forensic scientist must conduct two basic kinds of tests: presumptive and confirmatory. The reason presumptive tests are conducted first is because they are more cost-efficient than the more cumbersome confirmatory tests.
What is a presumptive test?
Presumptive tests for blood can be found in two broad categories: those that change color, and those that cause a glowing reaction.
Presumptive tests that depend on a color change involve the following:
Leucomalachite green (LMG) color test: This chemical reagent has been around since the early part of the 20th century and undergoes a chemical interaction with blood, yielding a characteristic green color.
Tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) color test: At a crime scene, a CSI technician swabs a suspected bloodstain with a moistened Q-tip and then applies it to a Hemastix strip containing TMB. A Hemastix strip is a dip stick used to test for the presence of blood. If the Hemastix strip turns blue-green, it might be blood.
Kastle-Meyer color test: Phenolphthalein is the active chemical reagent in this particular test. When blood, hydrogen peroxide, and phenolphthalein are mixed together, a dark pink color results. This color change is due to the hemoglobin (the oxygen-containing molecule within red blood cells) causing a chemical reaction between hydrogen peroxide and phenolphthalein.
Other tests depend on chemical reactions that cause blood to fluoresce, or glow, under an ultraviolet light source, uncovering blood that is invisible to the naked eye. Offenders many times try to scrub walls and floors clean, mistakenly taking for granted that if blood is not visible, it can not be found. Fortunately, that is not the case. At the scene of a crime, blood can show up by spraying a fluorescent chemical over the area suspected of containing blood. The lights are dimmed, and ultraviolet light is passed over the area, causing bloodstains to fluoresce in the dark just like you see on CSI. Not only is the presence of blood established, but the area of blood distribution is also clearly indicated. This is where blood spurts, drag marks, spatter, footprints, and handprints show up.
The actors you see on CSI use fluorescent chemicals to get the blood to reveal itself. The most common fluorescent chemicals used are luminol and fluorescein.
Luminol–Luminol is highly sensitive and may reveal blood that is present in minute quantities. Luminol is able to expose blood in places that have been cleaned repeatedly unless a solvent such as bleach was used, and even on walls that have been painted to hide blood. In spite of the fact that it can negatively impact some serologic testing processes, luminol does not affect subsequent blood typing or DNA analysis.
Fluorescein–Fluorescein has been around since the early part of the 20th century. This compound does not interact with bleach the way luminol does. Fluorescein is better used over luminol for exposing bloodstains that have been cleaned up using solvents such as bleach. Fluorescein is advantageous in that it is thicker than luminol and drips less, therefore, sticks to vertical surfaces much better than luminol.
What is a confirmatory test?
Teichmann and Takayama tests are the most commonly used confirmatory tests. Both tests depend on a chemical reaction between a reagent and hemoglobin. This reaction yields crystals, which then can be seen under a microscope. A considerable benefit of these tests is that they are more effective with aged stains.
The next time you watch your favorite forensic science/detective show like NCIS or CSI, you will have a clearer understanding of the chemicals used in exposing blood at a crime scene.
Free Things on Craigslist – What You May Find Available
Many Americans use Craigslist to buy, sell, and trade. However, you will also find free things within the mix. Everyone loves free stuff, so you may visit Craigslist.org. What are you likely to find for free? Although it varies, there are many common items offered on the popular classified website. What may you find?
Free Pets
Some of the most common things offered for free on Craigslist include cats, dogs, and fish. Why would someone give their pet away for free? Most individuals don’t have a choice. A dog owner may be relocating to an apartment that does not allow pets or a dog owner may not have the financial means necessarily to care for their beloved animal. For these individuals, they are giving up a member of their family. It isn’t about making money, but ensuring their dog, cat, or other pet has a good home.
Free Scrap Building Materials
Throughout the year, owners perform upgrades and repairs on their properties. This may involve tearing down an old barn and replacing it with a new one. Unfortunately, disposing of scarp building supplies costs money. Instead of paying disposal fees, they offer the supplies for free. Often times, you are just picking through a pile of scrap metal, wood, tiles, marble, and so forth.
Free Electronics
Right about now, you may be thinking “can I really get a Wii or an Xbox 360 for free? Yes and no. Rarely does an individual list a working electronic item for free. Many times, you will find things that don’t work. This may include a Macbook laptop that doesn’t hold a charge, a Dell desktop computer with a broken monitor, and so forth. You can get the item for without paying a cent, but you may need to pay for needed repairs.
Electronics, pets, and scrap building materials are just a few of the many products you may find for free on Craigslist.org. Just about anything can be listed. You have nothing to lose by looking, so what are you waiting for?
Your Child’s First Camera
Consider getting a good beginner camera for your child rather than a toy camera. Beginner cameras are quite sturdy and are a better buy than an expensive toy camera for a child. The cameras offer more features than toy cameras and end up being better value for your dollar.
The toyshops have several expensive toy cameras for children. The cameras have large button to make it easy for little fingers to press. They are usually very colourful and often have a cartoon character theme. Other than the visual appeal to a child they have very little else going for them. The picture quality is usually very average and the memory is usually not very large.
If you were to buy a good beginner camera, you would get much more value for your money and your child would have a camera suitable for many years of use. The beginner cameras are quite sturdy. They are designed to be thrown into a bag and taken everywhere. They are simple to use yet offer quite sophisticated options like zoom and some special effects.
Children do like to take plenty of photos so you will need to help them download the pictures to the computer quite often unless you invest in a larger memory card. It is probably worth the extra couple of dollars because you will get tired of downloading pictures all the time.
An added bonus of getting a real camera for a child as opposed to a toy one is that they can use the camera when they do school projects. They can extra enjoyment from adding the personal touch to their schoolwork. The camera can be used for many years without your child outgrowing it.
How to Deal With Aggressive Customers
No one likes receiving admonishments or blame and being shouted at. But when a client presents their complaints in an impolite way, remember they do not mean it personally. Delegates who attend sales training courses often complain about belligerent clients and ask for recommendations on how to deal with them efficiently.
What they really want is your understanding of their position and to motivate you to do something about their problems, even if they do this in a very tactless way.
If you get into a quarrel with your customers it is the surest way to lose them to your rivals. As regrettable as it is, you should not expect fair play. This sometimes means acting as a lightning conductor for complaining clients.
The more strained the economic situation is, the frostier the business climate becomes. Clients who are put under pressure by their own company are particularly critical and do not tolerate mistakes made by their suppliers.
They also react very sensitively to supposed assignation of guilt. The very fact that you, completely without any ulterior motives, dig deeper in an effort to really understand the client’s complaint, can trigger a violent reaction.
Tip: look for points that you can agree on without making any commitments. You could say, for example:
“I understand how unpleasant the current situation is for you.”
“You are completely right to point out this function limitation.”
Confront your clients in an optimistic frame of mind. Express your confidence that you will be able to solve the client’s problem. Say, for example, “I’m sure that we will be able to agree on a solution that is suitable for both sides.” It is important for the continuation of a good business relationship that you always end a discussion about complaints on a positive note.
Don’t put up with everything! Despite the understanding you may have for a complaining client, sometimes you need to apply the emergency brakes. If the client confronts you with a massive reproach – e.g. “You’ve cheated us!”, or “Your products are rubbish!” or “Your company is not reliable!”, you need to first of all talk about the feelings that have triggered these outbursts in the client.
The client’s outburst consists of two elements: a factual statement and a personal reproach. Make a conscious effort to move from the factual to the relationship level: “That is a strong accusation you’re making. I take that personally.” By reacting in a ‘controlled emotional’ way like this, you put the client in their place without them being insulted.
The client will then normally adopt a reconciliatory tone and indirectly apologise. This way, emotions will have been removed from the discussion and you can go on to discuss the factual heart of the complaint. It can be problematic, however, if angry clients forget their manners and become abusive. Register the client’s reaction silently as a sign of over-excitement and a cry for help.
The client is convinced that they are correct in making the complaint. If you also then react rudely, you will only provoke further complaints. Furthermore, the client will never buy from your company again and will use every future opportunity to badmouth your company.
Tip: Talk to the client about their concerns in a friendly way and ask for details. By tackling the complaint in a polite way and not becoming abusive, you are taking away the customer’s ‘moral’ justification to continue behaving unreasonably. This is an important technique as covered on sales training courses. Encourage the customer to talk, do not fall into the trap of making excuses.
How to take control of angry clients:
If you have an angry client on the phone, take deep breaths and do not allow yourself to become tense. This way you will keep a clear head and can think and argue logically.
Do not grind your teeth – instead, relax your facial muscles, shoulders and neck. If you have your body under control, you can also control your answers and remain business-like. Speak calmly and coolly with the complaining client. The more irritated your voice sounds, the more aggressive the client will become. If you raise your voice you will only be increasing the amount of tension inside you. You will calm the customer down if you respond in a pleasant manner,.
Note down the details of what the client is complaining about. That will help you to concentrate on the factual questions rather than getting angry at the client. At the same time you must make it clear to the client that you are taking their complaint very seriously.
Show the client that you are prepared to investigate their complaint. Mention the client’s name when speaking to them. Deal with them in a business-like way and ask questions.
Summarise the complaint. To make sure that you have understood the circumstances correctly, recount the situation back to the customer To make sure that you have understood the circumstances correctly, recount the situation back to the customer. People respond in a more professional manner when confronted with the facts.
Ask the client what solution they envisage for the problem. By asking them to consider a solution, you will be distracting them from their anger. You need not immediately accept the client’s suggested solution – the question alone is helpful in itself. Dealing effectively with complaints and objections is a subject that is covered in detail on sales training courses.
Cleaning Laboratory Glassware – How to Get Superior Results
As a lab professional, you conduct a lot of experiments and tests on a daily basis. Without doubt, you will use a number of instruments as well apparatus. Each of these will have to be one hundred per cent clean if you want to ensure the accuracy of tests and experiments you conduct.
Ultrasonic cleaners have been able to provide laboratories with versatility in cleaning. They provides lab technicians with the facility of cleaning efficiently as well as quickly. Saving on man-hours is one of the main benefits.
For starters, laboratory ultrasonic cleaners can be used to clean several materials, glass, plastic as well as metal based instruments. You do not have to invest in different units for different materials. These cleaners can be used on apparatus that are as delicate as pipettes and vials to the more sturdy beakers, bottles, and petri dishes. You will not have to worry about any of these being destroyed in an ultrasonic cleaning session. Besides laboratory apparatus, it can also handle the cleaning of microscope parts, lab tools, specimen mounts and more.
In terms of thoroughness, ultrasonic cleaning can get rid of residue from previous tests or experiments completely. You will not have to worry about minute bits of residue being left over. Hard to reach places are thoroughly cleansed. This heightens the efficiency of the lab. All of this cleaning is also not laborious. You will not end up wasting a lot of man hours in manual cleaning, which may not be as thorough. The speed at which this cleaning occurs is almost 60 times faster than normal. This leaves laboratory personnel free for more productive work.
In order to heighten the advantages of using an ultrasonic cleaner in the lab, there are certain pointers that have to be kept in mind. To begin with, all glassware needs to be washed as soon as work is completed with it. This prevents any hard-to-remove residue from sticking on. In some cases, a short soak in alkaline solution helps. When you use an ultrasonic cleaner for glassware, use the basket provided to lower it in. Direct contact with the base can ruin it. After every ultrasonic cleaning session, wash all the labware with distilled or deionized water. Tap water can be used, but you run the risk of water spots being left behind when the piece dries. You can never be too careful. Once the items are dry, examine them minutely for cracks or damage.
Next comes the plastic items. While the procedure of cleaning is the same, alkaline cleaning solutions cannot be used for plasticware. Such solutions combined with the power of ultrasonic cleaning can lead to damage or distort the physical appearance of the plasticware. It can also cause cracking and brittleness. Choose from the mild cleaning agents that are easily available for plastic labware. Rinsing with distilled water is a must, post ultrasonic cleaning.
Ultrasonic cleaners can also be used to clean labware that has been exposed to bio-hazardous and biological contaminants. The only additional requirement here is that these instruments needs to be further sterilized using an autoclave. This allows for thorough cleaning and sterilization of exposed glassware.
Ultrasonic cleaning has a proven track record in terms of use in the medical industry. Its versatility obviously comes out in the laboratory as well. It is efficient, thorough, and multi-faceted. It is an assurance that the cleaning cannot be faulted. With just a few tips to keep in mind, ultrasonic cleaning is the most effective cleaning protocol for laboratories.
Hemoglobin and Blood Cell Count Tests – The Basics
When your blood is drawn and sent to a laboratory for testing, a specially trained lab tech will test your blood. Lab techs typically have either a Bachelor’s college degree in Medical Technology, or an Associate’s degree. To be certified, they must take and pass a national examination. A phlebotomist (blood drawer) or a lab aide will typically draw your blood. Sometimes a nurse will draw your blood and send it to the lab for testing.
The most common blood test that doctors order is called the CBC-the Complete Blood Count. Some labs refer to it as an ABC-Automated Blood Count. The lab counts the cells in your blood-the red cells (RBC’s), white cells (WBC’s), and platelets. This is done in the Hematology department of the lab with sophisticated machines that the lab techs run, maintain, and troubleshoot.
Normal values given here are average ranges. Different laboratories use different methods, yielding slightly different results.
The CBC (ABC) consists of the following tests:
Red Blood Cell count (RBC count). Normal value for males is 4.2-5.6 million/mcl of blood. Normal value for females is 3.9-5.2 million/mcl of blood.
Hemoglobin (hgb). This is a protein in rbc’s that binds oxygen to carry the oxygen throughout the body. Normal value for males is 14-18 grams/dl of blood. Normal value for females is 12-16 grams/dl of blood.
Hematocrit (hct). This is the percentage of red cells in your blood. About half of your blood is a liquid called plasma made up mostly of water, and the other half is cells. Most of these cells are red cells, which give your blood its red color. If your hct is low, you are anemic. Normal value for males is 40-54%. Normal for females is 37-47%. If your hct is about 40%, that means about 60% of your circulating blood is plasma.
White Blood Cell count (WBC count). Normal value is 5,000-10,000 white blood cells/mcl of blood.
Differential-a lab tech differentiates the five types of WBC’s. The percentage of certain types of WBC’s is higher in bacterial infections, other types are higher with allergies or parasitic infections, and another type is higher with viral infections. Today, this is usually done by a machine, but if the machine finds anything abnormal, a lab tech will recheck it under a microscope before reporting out a final result.
Platelet count-counts the number of platelets in your bloodstream, which help function in the clotting process. Platelets are very tiny-the smallest of the blood cells. Normal range is 130,000-400,000/mcl of blood.
These are the basic tests of the CBC (ABC). Other values have to do with various parameters of the red blood cell. This test is done in the Hematology department of the laboratory.
